Febuary 22nd & 23rd, 2016
* Lots of work on the canopy skins. I'm going by the recommendation of Gary Hobbs from Lightning Aircraft West. My supplied skins were very cracked and not easy to get wrapped around the canopy. The method is to fill the canopy frame channel with foam and then glass over that.
* I'm thinking a lot about getting the wing spar support structure into the fuselage so I rearranged the hanger. After that I set the wings on saw horses and fitted the support structure to the wing spars. The holes in the structure needed moved out a tiny bit for all to fit. The manual says no more than a 1/6" but it needed less than that. With help from Thomas the spars and structure were joined and the wings are only supported at the tips. The wings are very sturdy.
* To sand the lower fiberglass filler at the fuselage to stab joint I flipped the plane over. The front end is in a sling and rotates easily. Lots of sanding to get it smooth and ready for body filler. There were also bubbles in the jell-coat on the underside of the stabs so those were sanded down and filler added. The fuselage bottom suffered some gouges during transport to Los Alamos so those were prepped and filled as well.
End of the day and itchy work close are off!
Will they all fit?
The holes in the tubular structure had to be opened ever so slightly to get the bolts through.
Real smooth but still needs body filler to make it better
