April 1-13, 2018
** There is so much that has happened since April first I'm not sure where to start. I have been waiting for my replacement engine to be shipped so kept busy with little stuff, like planning. I ordered and received the Vertical Power Pro electronics buss with installation kit. It will be mounted horizontally behind the instrument panel and just above the throttle/mixture cables. That will keep most wires short and easier to trace. The other planning is the Garmin G3X system. I will be ordering everything that goes with that by April 20th. Trying to figure out what all is needed for that is quite a chore. Garmin is not very straight forward about what is needed. With the help of Air One Aviation we think we have it together.
** Now for the good stuff. The engine came!
1. Installed the oil temp probe.
2. Installed the P-Mag manifold pressure hoses. They were attached to the manifold pressure sensor on the firewall.
3. Reconnected all the hoses previously installed. Oil, fuel, pressure, vacuum, drain lines, etc.
4. Decided how to route the throttle and mixture cables. I had to design, fabricate, install, and then re-install the mounts and support plate for the cables. It had to clear the bottom of the engine and the top of the heat muff. Getting the cables just right is a trick. The throttle is a straight shot but the mixture has to slant upwards. It comes close to the induction tub, but close is good enough. Everything works smoothly, with the right amount of movement. Check out the pictures.
5. Fastened the Boden cable to the alt-air plate. I will replace it later with one that has a liner for smother operation. I also found that I cut the sleeve a bit too short. The door opens too far and the handle end pulls to far out.
6. re-installed the exhaust.
7. Installed the cylinder head temperature probes.
8. installed the exhaust gas temperature probes.
9. installed the spark plug wiring harness.
10. Installed the electric propeller brush block mount. I had to cut a hole in the forward cooling baffle. I'll make a detachable plate to cover any opening.
11. By attaching the spinner, I found that the back plate on the prop would not mate up. There is a 1/4" spacer that I relocated to the other side. That moved the back plate forward and made a perfect fit with the spinner.
12. Installed the alternator.
** After that I took a rest and pushed the plane out into the sun to play, admire, and take photos. There's probably more, but it is getting late and I can't think of anything else.
It just clears
